The course is now slightly better and available more cheaply
I’ve updated my course’s pricing structure, in an exact imitation of Michael Ashcroft, whom I tend to imitate.
There are now four pricing tiers:
$175, for lower-income people
$275, the standard
$350, for those with money who wish to offer me support
$450, for those who are absolutely price-insensitive and like me
So far, the average unit price has remained about the same, and more people have access to the course, which all seems positive.
As well, I’ve added a couple of new videos, one on the important topic of self-sabotage, and another explaining how artistic restrictions can help you access authentic communication.
The first of these was prompted by an email from someone who bought the course. This is something I explicitly invite: the course includes a prompt to email me if there’s a subject I didn’t address that you’d like to see a video about. Which seems like a good deal, and I’m surprised that more people haven’t taken advantage? So please do take advantage!
I’m happy that this course can remain a living entity, mutating and becoming more useful over time, given your input.
Speaking of your input…
Going to Japan
Later today, I’m hopping on a plane for Japan with Cate. This is a tremendously exciting prospect. People seem to like Japan with about the same frequency that they like running water. Also, I have, of course, experienced the fineness of Japanese goods and culture, and I’ve gone through phases of Nipponophilia, which are legally required of nerdy white men.
I would appreciate your input! Please let me know if there are things
That we absolutely must do, especially in the Tokyo or Kyoto area
That you would specifically like me to write about, as I will almost certainly be writing about things
I’ll be trying to take a break from Substack until the 20th, when I return, but I might shoot off a random late-night communication despite that, as is my habit.
Perfume project
I’m starting a fragrance company with some of the most talented people I know. We will be producing delicious perfumes with interesting stories. It will be called Scout Dixon West, for reasons that will become clear, and that’s all I want to say about it publicly for now.
But! If you’d like to stay apprised of details as they emerge—and probably get discounts when our fragrances are released next year, and maybe even an invite to a launch or something—then click this link and join the mailing list, please!
What I've been up to lately, September edition
Longtime reader, first-time commenter - thanks for all the online musings you've shared!
This is not particularly off the beaten path, but if the thought of going to Hiroshima appeals to you, definitely go. It's less than a 2 hour bullet train ride each way from Kyoto. The museum dedicated to the atomic bomb is very well done, and I found it incredibly moving and meaningful to spend time with the enormity of that human decision and historical event. The better part of a day was enough, leaving time to go further down to Miyajima and check out the floating torii gate and friendly deer (bonus tip: check that the latter isn't under construction; when I went it was being worked on and all I could see was a billboard of the gate atop the scaffolding it 😂).
I’m in Hakone right now, after visiting Tokyo/Kyoto/Hiroshima (which is pretty much what everyone else has recommended, and I agree wholeheartedly). One tip for Kyoto - I found the temples to be unbearable with heat and hordes of tourists anytime between roughly 10:30am and 4pm. It’s worth trying to visit the popular ones on either end of the day as much as possible. Also, the Okochi Sanso Garden in arashiyama (east Kyoto) was the most serene place of the whole trip for me.
