I do not recommend the Litter-Robot, a $500 automatic litter box, because, no matter how you try to govern your cats’ behavior, they are living beings, and they will relieve themselves where they want to. When you find that they have chosen to use the exterior of the unit as a toilet, it will injure, slightly, a distant, tender patch of your soul.

Or let's say it's hurricane season and you're already at the end of the pier at the tip of the peninsula of avoidance, and it smells like sun-baked fish guts in a way your cat would appreciate if you could have borne to bring another sentient creature on this expedition, the Litter-Robot makes a cozy last-ditch shelter-pod from which to experience your inevitable submersion.
